During the last 10 years, more than 100 flood events have taken place in Europe, whereby the flood 1997 in Oder area, on the Elbe and Danube 2002 and 2006 were of special concernment, as well as the one in Alpine region in summer 2005. On the Weser, only smaller floods have occurred at the time in the River Basin District, causing minor damages, anyway the River Basin Commission has developed a Plan for Flood Protection based on the prevention conception 2006, defining besides activity objectives and strategies also the measures for preventive flood protection.

Since autumn 2007, the EC Flood Risk Management Directive is in force, which was implemented into the national legislation since 2009, along with the update of the Water Management Law and laws in federal states. With the administrative agreement, the River Basin Commission Weser has awarded a contract to its Management Office to coordinate the implementation steps and harmonize them with the federal states.

Flood gauges represent the current water levels of rivers and give information if the water level rises or drops. They are managed by the federal states and can be found on their internet sites.
